My favorite work horse, November 28, 2010

I am an avid XC skier and have worked winters outdoors in the mts of the PNW for 20+ yrs. These pants continue to be my work horse pants. They are warm, windproof and durable. While not waterproof, they shed snow and light moisture well. I have a pair that is over 15 years old and I wear them at 2x a week in the winter still. My second pair is a hand me down pair.
The only thing that has gone wrong is that after 12 years, one of the ankle zippers blew out. I rigged it so it still works less the top 1″. Now if I could just loose 15 pounds – they would fit like they did 15 years ago!
Thinking of all my female XC ski pals – they all have a pair and have had them for years.
They are pricy but worth it!

I live in Minnesota and take my dog on brisk walks each day, in every type of weather. When the temperatures turn cold (late October), I bring out these pants and wear them every day. Until the temperature dips to ten degrees or lower, they are warm on their own, and then in lower temps, I pair them with smartwool layers and I stay warm and agile without heavy bulk. They are not binding in any way, and the material is soft and non-irritating. Finally, they taper in the ankles for a flattering cut, and fit with both walking shoes and winter boots. I am 5’1″ and the petite fits perfectly. I am in love with these pants and highly recommend them.

This is a great product. I am glad that I found it on Amazon, as many cross country ski shops run out of this pant early in the season. I’ve used these pants for cross country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, and doing outdoor chores like shoveling snow. I’ve also used them in less cold weather for bicyling. They are tailored enough that you can wear them to a moderately-priced restaurant. Cleaning is easy, but watch for pilling after a year of wear. That can be resolved with a good fabric/pill shaver, and they will look fine. I’ve also used these pants for hiking in cooler weather. They are very versatile and I still have a couple of pairs of these pants from ten years ago. They are very durable and actually comfortable inside a house if you keep it cool. Smart looking and very comfortable. I like the normal waist position and these pants have that. Other pants are trending toward a lower waist, which is pretty ridiculous in the winter. If you encounter outside temps or windchill below 15 degrees Fahrenheit, you might want to throw a nylon overpant over your Sporthill XC pants. The pants resist wind, but are not entirely windblocked, making them breathable..always a good thing when you are working up a sweat, but when you stop, you don’t want cool breezes to give you a chill. I was afraid that SportHill would do away with this classic pant, as it was not on the shelves of stores I visited last year. One last word: the pants can take a beating. I took a spill on my bike and landed on asphalt. The pants protected my skin from a bad abrasion, and the fabic was slightly chafed at the knee, but it did not tear, which I thought it might do considering my bruise. Great pants that you will want to wear all the time in fall, winter and spring.
